In 1938 you and all your neighbors lost your jobs on the farms in Central Virginia. With wives and children you all were worried about how you would get by. When war was declared in 1941 you were able to join the Army and send your pay back to your wife and kids. When you were away at war you didn't really spend any money. Due to hazard pay your paychecks were pretty sizable. All the men in your town were able to get their families through the depression by joining up as soldiers. Safe to say the war saved your town.
